When Geranium oil is made from young green leaves, the oil has a slight Lemon scent. When it is made with older leaves that have changed their colour, the scent changes from Lemon to Rose. Geranium oil is considered the poor mans Rose – 5ml of Rose would cost £70 (available on request). There are more than 700 varieties of cultivated Geranium. Many are used as a fragrance component in all kinds of soaps, creams, perfumes and hair care. The French began commercial production of the oil in the early 19th Century.
